Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is an internationally recognised intensive, short-term one-to-one literacy programme for children between 5 and 6 years of age who find reading and writing challenging.  Its aim is to accelerate their progress in literacy to enable them to catch up with their peers over the course of two terms (up to a hundred lessons).

During each daily, half hour Reading Recovery lesson at Rabbsfarm Primary School, children read 3-4 short books, learn about letter sounds (phonics), spelling patterns, simple grammar and punctuation and write a very short story or report consisting of 1 or 2 sentences. The children then turn their writing into a sentence puzzle, which helps them build the links between reading and writing. The lesson finishes with reading a new book, which they then read independently at the next lesson.

Developed over 30 years ago Reading Recovery has a 75% success rate in the UK. Children who do not accelerate to the same extent can be assessed for further specialised support at the end of the lesson series. All Reading Recovery teachers undertake a year of specialised training, then attend half termly training sessions. They are also observed teaching by their Teacher Leader and do peer observed lessons to ensure that teaching standards are maintained.

Our Specialist Reading Recovery Teacher is Mrs Williamson
