Art and Design Intent
At Rabbsfarm Primary School, Art enables the children to explore, develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas using a range of materials and techniques. Art provides some of the highest forms of human creativity. We actively promote looking at the work of others, celebrating other cultures and encouraging diversity. Children are given the opportunity within lessons to explore ideas and meaning through the work of great artists and their styles and learn about the history, roles and functions of art. This gives the children an opportunity to take inspiration from these key artists and create their own artworks in their particular styles. Furthermore, it enabled children to understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms and how it contributes to the wealth of our nation through a cross curricular approach. This is important to the development of pupils’ well-being, appreciation of the world and understanding and empathy of others.
Art contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement, and self-reflection. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art. We also expect children to be able to look at an image or a piece of art and to have an understanding of it, not just react to it. We equip them with the skills required to have an understanding of the language of art, so that they are able to describe what they see in detail and provide evidence for their observations. We believe we provide an arts curriculum that engages, challenges and inspires minds, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and bring their own ideas and works of art to life. Opportunities to practise art techniques when using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space are embedded across the Art curriculum through the use of individual sketchbooks.
